I haven’t had any social media apps installed on my phone in years, but on rare occasions when I’ve installed Instagram it always eats up absurd amounts of battery. Earlier this year I had it installed for a work conference trip (lol) and it used up so much battery that I ended up stranded in a strange city when my phone died unexpectedly. Luckily I was able to walk back to my hotel in about an hour, but was still a weird experience. Haven’t really used instagram since.
When I was still using what used to be Twitter on Safari on my iPhone (I gave up on the app and was using control panel for Twitter to block a bunch of stuff) my phone would heat up to almost unusable points within like five minutes. Literally nothing else on my phone was like that, not streaming music, not playing podcasts, not watching videos, not using the camera, not even playing Honkai Star Rail heated my phone up as quick as simply opening Twitter in Safari
Twitter couldn’t translate the cat tweet but my iphone could. What a bad kid, staying up late!
Its weird how apps that i am sure are harvesting my shit in the background don’t even run my phone as hot and heavy and musktwitter. I miss the local networks and i miss memes but man, life out here in the fresh air is good. My dogs way happier i quit too.
Reddit is a dying mall. It has been going downhill for years in the same way other social media has, but it always held onto a fleeting, freewheeling punk rock spirit in the style of web 1.0. Now it is just as corporate and commercial feeling as Facebook or Tiktok.
If you ever cover digital influencers again, please consider covering the vital figure of John Pork, who went viral on TikTok not *that* long ago. So like 5 internet years (3 months).
