I disagree about AI and search but from a specific context. I’m a college librarian and my entire job is helping students search out information. Both they and, honestly I, sometimes struggle with turning their concepts into keywords. Something I like about ChatGPT is the ability to throw just, in sometimes hideously imprecise natural language, my question or idea, and to get back something more orderly from it. I hate the idea of AI search just being “Google but more”, but I see a lot of value in future search tools having more of that capacity to accept ambiguity.
As an Old, I’ve wondered recently, “ugh, am I going to have to start parting my hair in the middle?” Thank you for reassuring me that this trend is already over.
I honestly feel a big part of what impresses people about chatgpt is they never really could see so easily how big and broad the interest was. The chat interface changes your perspective and allows you to be surprised again
I saw Rebecca Jennings' tweet, and thank you for putting that feeling into words. As a mid-gen millennial there's just something about the aesthetics of the Gen Z tik tok podcast look that I bounce off of. But of course, now that I think about it, I think there's little Gen Z would find appealing about my preferred content aesthetics: people (admittedly usually white men) talking about video games, movies, books, swords, crafting, etc. in a home office, usually dressed in button downs or graphic tees. I call it Jacob Geller-core.
