The public high school I teach at in Chicago had an instagram set up where you filled out a Google form declaring who your crush was and the anonymous account owner posted screen shots. But it turned into a place for people to talk about why other people’s crushes were wrong and it was pretty mean.
Also too: are Gentleminions-type meme excursions an evolution of flashmobs (remember them? how quaint!) or completely different? Flashmobs seemed more ironic/anarchic, but both are about doing something with other people. Maybe we're tired of bowling alone?
The shipping page is absolutely a thing! Totally blew up about a year ago as my daughter was leaving middle school. A student created an Instagram account and it was chaos - kids angry that their friends were being shipped with others, kids baiting each other, etc. It was the last blowup of that (small) class of kids before they dispersed to various high schools.
I haven’t heard of teens calling it “shipping” but “make fun of unpopular person by saying how ridiculous it would be if anyone liked them” is age-old
Isn’t gentleminions in the vein of flashmobs and doing absurd stuff IRL for the sake of, as they used to say, “the lulz”?
Definitely was surprised about gen z being into white nationalism, guess things might not get better after all!
I thought shipping was like "Ship Jlo and Ben"
