The scramble to back up CDC.gov
Read to the end for Trevor
Welcome to Garbage Weekend. It’s the internet garbage you know and love, but in a format that’s easier to read while you brace yourself for a new week of various horrors.
Chaos At The CDC
Before we get into today’s weekend issue, we received a tip concerning the CDC.gov website. We’ve reached out to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) spokesperson and have not heard back.
An employee working for an agency funded by federal grants working in HIV care told Garbage Day that their manager said the CDC website is expected to come down "in its entirety" and "to save what they might need." Targethiv.org, run by the Health Resources and Services Administration, is already down. And as of January 29th, a security measure was put in place blocking the archiving of targethiv.org. The employee stressed that they were told it wasn’t just HIV resources that were being impacted, but the entire site. There are already reports of various landing pages and directories on the CDC website going down and we’ve verified that all the content on the site pertaining to youth health services is gone.
According to a contractor working for the CDC, staffers were told to remove "all references to gender ideology" by 5 PM today or the CDC website will be removed entirely. Everything "is being delivered verbally," they told Garbage Day. Staffers were told not to communicate about this in writing. They also said that staffers were also instructed to "remove pronouns from email signatures today," as well.
The CDC website has already been targeted by “anti-DEI” executive orders and, according to Stat News, datasets concerning sexual orientation and the CDC’s Social Vulnerability Index are already down. There is a Google Form being used by health professionals and journalists circulating as a way to coordinate the archiving of the CDC’s data, which you can find here.

This week, most of the Trump Administration’s big moves weren’t exactly surprising, if you remember what happened when Elon Musk took over Twitter. Move over, Magna Carta, get ready for a Lowtax-inspired government. Among the X influences are identical suspicious emails urging federal employees to quit, random Gen Z henchmen in key positions, and too many contradictory new initiatives to list here. Can’t wait to get a rate-limited passport! In other collapsing institution news, turns out you don’t need infinite money to make an AI chatbot. The Chinese DeepSeek model was made for only a few million dollars, kinda sorta. It’s just as good as the big players when it comes to getting facts wrong and denying atrocities. Speaking of denial, if you’re reading this in a Starbucks, stay alert for the laptop panic button!
Oh well, here’s some fun stuff…
